Fortress Mountain ski area Overview

Fortress Mountain ski area, a renowned ski resort, is fondly recognized for its exceptional snow quality and breathtaking scenery. First opened in 1967 as Snowridge, the resort quickly gained popularity among ski enthusiasts, offering an unforgettable experience powered by its well-equipped ski resources and facilities. The resort is embedded in the rich history of Kananaskis Country, predating the provincial park by eleven years. Despite its closure in 2004, the mountain has persisted as a popular destination for snowcat skiing, supported by dedicated and safety-conscious crews.

The ski area has been undergoing a phased renovation since 2012, with plans for new installations and a full revival of its infrastructure. The three original chairlifts remain standing, with plans to revive the Canadian Chair and Backside lift. The inclusion of modern high-speed quads in place of the previous t-bars, as well as the potential addition of new lifts, forms the backbone of the redevelopment plans. The establishment of a yurt-style lodge at the base of the Canadian is also in the pipeline, as well as the demolition of the old lodge.

Fortress Mountain ski area has also been a popular filming location, having been featured in the Liam Neeson film "Cold Pursuit". Yet, the resort is not without controversy, with concerns raised over its water usage. Despite this, the resort has remained a popular destination for training courses, corporate events, and recreational ski trips.

As the resort undergoes its transformation, it continues to be a much-loved destination, with many looking forward to its full reopening. The charm of the Fortress Mountain ski area lies not only in its stunning views and excellent snow, but also in the memories created and shared over the years, making it a favorite among many, and a place they hope to see revived to its former glory.
